Letter to my Grandchildren
August 30th, 2015
As I have served families over the years, I have been fortunate to work with people with inspirational life stories. For example, individuals who have overcome great odds, built very successful companies, and/or generously share their time, talent, and treasure to bless others. Many, if not all, of these individuals say to me that they want their legacies to be passed on, yet all too often, I have found that their life stories have not been shared with their children and grandchildren. It is a very rewarding part of our work at Legacy Capitals when we help our clients capture their living legacy stories via audio, video, and/or by writing books or letters.
Richard Branson (Virgin) decided to respond to a challenge he received via a tweet regarding writing a “heartfelt” letter to his family. He accepted this challenge and decided to start by writing a letter to his grandchildren. “I’ve had so many memorable and defining life moments. But there are a few that stand out above the rest. Becoming a grandfather, three times over in just two months, was definitely one of these moments.” Note: Mr. Branson nicknamed himself “grand-dude.” Here are excerpts from his letter to his grandchildren:
“My golden rule in life is to have fun. Life is not a dress rehearsal, so don’t waste your precious time doing things that don’t light your fire. Do what you enjoy, and enjoy what you do. Trust me; great things will follow.”
“Don’t let your head always rule your heart. Life’s more fun when you say yes – so dream big and say yes to your heart’s desires. Dreaming is one of our greatest gifts – so look at the world with wide-eyed enthusiasm, and believe you are more powerful than the problems that confront you.”
“Never betray your dreams for the sake of fitting in. Instead be passionate about them. Passion will help you stay the course, and inspire others to believe in you and your dreams too.”
“Remember to treat others like you would like to be treated. Always be nice, always be caring. Give people the benefit of the doubt. And don’t hesitate to give out second chances. It’s incredible how much people lift and rise to the challenge when you believe in them and trust them.”
“Be open with everyone around you, especially your parents. They will always be there for you, willing to share in your adventures, support your decisions and love you unreservedly.”
“Above all, love and know that you are loved.”
We at Legacy Capitals strongly encourage you to set aside time like Richard Branson, to write a letter or record a video capturing some of your special life moments, lessons you have learned, and what you believe will help your children and grandchildren live inspirational lives.
