Family “Quarantine” Time – Day # 9 Idea

March 24th, 2020

By way of reminder, Day # 8’s Idea was to discuss how your family can love others during this time – aka, true family philanthropy.

Day # 9 Idea

Today’s idea is based on the important metaphor: “Put your oxygen mask on first, before helping others.”

My wife and I are doing everything we can to ensure our children are just being children, even though their context has changed quite a bit. We want them to focus on play and learning, and not on the external challenges among us. Overall, they are in fact not concerned about the risk out there (thank goodness) as represented by our son continuing to ask why he can’t play with his friends like he use to.

Therefore, it is really us parents who are rightfully in touch with the risk, and as a result, experiencing higher levels of stress. It is important to make sure we are “putting our masks on first” in order to take care of ourselves and our loved ones. To this end, here are a few ideas to help reduce stress:

  1. Create quiet time and listen to relaxation music.
  2. Watch Dinner with the Gaffigans.
  3. Practice anxiety reduction habits.

There are enumerable ways to reduce stress, be sure to implement each day the tactics that work best for you.

Please share your experiences as you implement my ideas or any others you have implemented with your family.
